On September 1st, 2021, classmate Luo Maochao from our laboratory published a review paper titled "Drug resistance in colorectal cancer: An epigenetic overview" in the international academic journal Biochim Biophys Acta Rev Cancer (with an impact factor of 10.68).


Colorectal cancer is one of the major lethal cancers worldwide. Although significant progress has been made in the treatment of colorectal cancer in the past few decades, drug resistance remains a major obstacle in the clinical treatment of colorectal cancer and is closely associated with poor prognosis of patients. Therefore, revealing the underlying molecular mechanisms of drug resistance and searching for new strategies to delay or overcome drug resistance are expected to improve the survival prognosis of colorectal cancer patients. An increasing amount of evidence suggests that epigenetic regulation is one of the major factors driving the intrinsic and acquired drug resistance in colorectal cancer. DNA methylation, non-coding RNAs, and histone modifications mediate colorectal cancer drug resistance by regulating drug transport, inhibiting relevant drug targets, evading immune responses, and drug-induced cell death, etc. In addition, the reversibility of epigenetic changes provides the possibility of using small molecule drugs to reverse epigenetic modifications and thereby overcome colorectal cancer drug resistance. This review discusses the epigenetic regulation of colorectal cancer drug resistance and new strategies for using epigenetic drugs to prevent or reverse colorectal cancer drug resistance in the treatment of colorectal cancer.
